LAMP install available for any VPS Order

Here’s what you get when you ask us to install a LAMP System for your Network Presence VPS.

Your choice of a 32 bit or 64 bit Linux OS, either CentOS or any common Linux variant is installed as the operating system of your VPS.

The Apache web server is installed along with the latest relevant PHP software, and what it needs to talk to a local mySQL DB server and Mail Server for sending email. That’s the conventional “LAMP”, being Linux Apache MySQL and PHP, which we extend to include Mail Server software and the phpMyAdmin web based access to the mySQL Database server on the VPS.

We also install the Mail Server mentioned above, as well as Perl, SFTP/FTP and DNS server software, plus any other customisations or such you may know you need. eg: PHP version 5.3, other PHP or Apache modules, etc.

This provides you with a ready-built Web Serving VPS, along with all the access you may need (including the standard Linux ‘root’ user access etc) to get your web content up and running quickly on your newly ordered VPS.

Speeding up Heavy PHP Sites like Drupal/Joomla

Here’s a few tips and suggestions to lower the ave. memory usage and increase the efficiency of heavy PHP sites delivered via Apache on Linux VPS platforms.

The aim here is to “appropriately scale” both the size of the Apache web server and the way that it responds to connections, so as to provide good performance in smaller RAM VPS environments.

So in CentOS, edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and set or change the following settings:

StartServers 3
MinSpareServers 2
MaxSpareServers 3
MaxClients 15
MaxRequestsPerChild 5000

and

KeepAlive On
MaxKeepAliveRequests 100
KeepAliveTimeout 2

The same settings can be applied to the relevant config files for other Linux distributions and there’s some mySQL tuning that I’ll suggest shortly too.

Regards,
Richard.

Data Centre & POP Maintenance Notice – from 10pm, Tues, Apr 17th

We keep visits to a minimum at the “Lights Out Mode” data centre POP of Network Presence in Sydney, but we want to deploy new hardware and software to this main POP and this work requires us to physically attend the Data Centre (Equinix in Sydney) to perform actions which are highly technical & specific to the hardware and systems of Network Presence.

Some upgrades include software and hardware upgrades to give Network Presence a “leg up” in capacity, including memory, CPU & network upgrades. For example, I’ll be installing and commissioning upgraded Cisco Routers to the POP, as well as a switching upgrade, which will result in a 10Gb Ethernet network for primary server and storage interconnects.

Accordingly, I’ll be emailing all customers who may be affected by the short restarts etc that will occur during this Maintenance Window, which starts from ~10pm Sydney time on this coming Tuesday evening (April 17th 2012). Each customer is not expected to see longer than a few short outages (during the evening) of connectivity to or operation of their VPS or other service from Network Presence, and I’ll be contactable by phone & online during and after these works incase there’s any issues that arise.

FYI and regards,
Richard.
