Installing Mediawiki to CentOS 5.x VPS

Create the file /etc/yum.repos.d/atrpms.repo with the following contents:

[atrpms]
name=EL5 $releasever - $basearch - ATrpms
baseurl=http://dl.atrpms.net/el$releasever-$basearch/atrpms/stable
gpgkey=http://ATrpms.net/RPM-GPG-KEY.atrpms
gpgcheck=1

Then run yum search mediawiki to see that you’ve got the ATrpms Repo!

From there it’s just yum install mediawiki

We care about Backups

I’ve spent a good amount of time this month making sure that VPS/VDS Backups are stored on separate physical server chassis for most customer servers!

This means that should a “complete hardware failure” occur (rare, but a failure mode that’s relevant to Backups & their retrieval), then we’d be able to restore customer virtual server data, disk & storage onto some ‘restoration’ server to bring customer content back online ASAP.

It’s 2011 & we prefer Citrix Xen based Virtualisation

You’d think that the 2nd or 3rd player in Virtualisation / underlying cloud computing technology would be doing better in getting “press” about the value of its virtualisation performance & capabilities. So in this context, Citrix’ Xen Virtualisation is a “silent winner” still in 2011.

The challenge for Citrix is to keep innovating & push the boundaries on Virtualisation capabilities and performance from newer hardware & better methodologies for 2012 & beyond!

From our side, we prefer to use Xen based virtualisation technologies for customer VPS/VDS services. VMWare still isn’t on desired or required to service our customers and the other virtualisation technologies aren’t desirable due to their poor QoS provided to virtualised customer servers.

Canberra POP online!

I’m pleased to say that after 10 years away, I have servers and high-speed connectivity online at a Data Centre in Canberra, with connectivity to TransAct’s network itself coming up soon, but our “big fat” servers online now!

These Canberran Servers are the ‘next evolution’ in server technology for us, utilising very high performance, with very high availability (HA/HP).

To celebrate this new POP & service capacity for Network Presence, you can get double the Disk storage of any Network Presence VPS Plan, by selecting or nominating to run that VPS in Canberra, instead of our default Sydney location, and you can be very confident that your data is safe & available in Canberra when you need it.

Existing Network Presence VPS customers can also use this offer to get twice as much disk space for their current VPS, please contact us for more details & to move your VPS to Canberra with more & much faster storage!

I’ll update this post with more info and please see our Forums too for more..
