Good news for our growth in the US, bad news for our Canberra POP

Bad news out of the way first: Our long running but never very popular Canberra POP is going to go offline later this week. This is not caused by Network Presence nor any decision of mine, rather there is a problem that one of our suppliers of services to that POP can’t resolve (not technical issues), which mean that they can’t maintain service for us there beyond this week. I only became aware of this issue late last week and I’ve tried to find alternative sources of connectivity supply to our rack there in the last few business days, but to no avail.
I’ll be contacting the 4 customers that have small VPS services with us in Canberra to coordinate moving their VPS back into our main Sydney POP, and then out to our new Redundant POP that will now be in Los Angeles, USA, if they want the role that our Canberra POP was playing for us in regards to “completely separate Infrastructure to our Sydney POP and location”, see below..

Now for good news: When Australians voted in the Conservative Abbott Government last year, the NBN died, and with it our dreams of hyper-accelerated growth in Australia (of which the Canberra POP was an early prototype, but it’s “died on the vine”). So throughout this year we’ve been steadily re-positioning Network Presence for growth outside of Australia, and the first and most important part of that has been an upgrade or re-deployment of our US POP, which has been ‘full’ for some time in its many years old original site in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

Today I’ve completed negotiations and struck agreements for Network Presence to have a multi-server POP in one of the “core” Data Centres of the Internet, known as “One Wilshire“. This new US POP for Network Presence will have multiple gigabit Internet access and we’ll be Peering with some of the biggest networks available there, and from there we’ll deploy a variety of products and services to Australians and customers world-wide that make unique and valuable use of this fantastic location on the Internet, as well as using it to drive further innovation and developments in Network Presence as a whole and it’s a very exciting development and capability for the company!

tl;dr – our “Redundant POP” is moving from Canberra to Los Angeles, we’re losing a very low-capability & under-utilised Australian POP and gaining a massive (comparatively in many ways) US POP. I’m only sorry for the short notice and bumpy ride as that process happens by the end of 2014.

Please feel free to contact us directly if you’d like more information.

FYI and regards,
Richard.
