We Peer so you don’t have to pay for some of your data usage

Sometimes we get asked what our “Non-Peerable Internet Transit” VPS and Colo data quotas mean and it’s based on the rather unique nature of the domestic Internet in Australia.

In short, Australia (being so remote to the rest of the planet) has a large network of “Peering Networks” which means that much of the domestic or Australian Internet is reachable via these peering networks.

We’re a big believer in this, so we have many peering links, which means that customer usage of our ‘non-peerable’ (and thus more expensive) Internet links is lower and we pass that cost saving on to customers by not metering / charging customers for data sent or recv’d via our peering network links.

Only data which we can’t deliver via domestic peering relationships is metered towards your account’s data usage quotas.

This is a great benefit to customers who have end-users or customers of their content which are domestic or in Australia, meaning that some customers only have a small portion of their total data usage metered towards their data quotas.

Examples of sites and other networks reachable via our Peering Links include AARNet‘s national network (Australian Universities, CSIRO and other education institutions) and many of the larger ISP networks in Australia.
