Public Cloud or Private Cloud, either way, get into it!

We’ve been working on ‘cloud computing‘ for decades before the term was coined, but nowadays it’s getting easier and easier to find reasons to use cloud computing for your own purposes. Even most iPhone users nowadays with iOS 5 are using cloud computing through Apple’s aptly named “iCloud” service, so it’s certainly a common and widely used by millions of people daily kind-of IT service.

From our perspective though, the term “cloud computing” has a few requirements, the two main ones being;

On-demand capabilities – where you’re able to start and stop resources used whenever you want, and just pay for that usage

An API – so you can integrate those on-demand capabilities into some form of programmatic or automatic method of utilising your cloud based resources.

Sometimes Virtualisation is listed as a requirement of cloud computing, but that’s not always the case and usually you can’t “put your hand on the physical server” that’s providing you with your cloud computing services because it’s in a remote Data Centre somewhere.

Based on the above, there are two main types (and a ‘hybrid’ of them) of cloud computing, being;

Public Cloud – where you use resources which are shared amongst other users and where those resources are often available on the general Internet,

and

Private Cloud – where you run the resources which provide your cloud computing capabilities, either “in-house” or in a private network or on your own or rented ‘Colo’ equipment in Data Centres.

This leads us to an example deployment of cloud computing services that customers have let us know of their use of our products:

The customer wants to put online a custom Java App, either through Tomcat or Glassfish. They copy their “go live” build to the VPS Appliance that we put online for them and the App is online in minutes.
But some time after running that VPS and their Java App their site “goes viral” and thus they very quickly need more computing resources. We quickly meet with them and knowing Java Hosting requirements, we cluster their Java Application Server (a Tomcat) and provide them with web and API based means to launch additional VPS to join their cluster when and as end-user or web consumer load hits their site.

We can provide you with either of the above types of Cloud Computing deployments (ie: Public or Private), as well as the combination or blend of them, called Hybrid Clouds, where some aspects are utilising shared infrastructure and may be on the public Internet, and other components or systems may be private or on dedicated infrastructure. We can also do that by providing the on-demand and API aspects which we believe are required for cloud computing.

Cloud Computing, Virtualisation and customised or bespoke online services are our long-term speciality, so please feel free to contact us with any enquiry or to discuss your requirements.

Fantastic Australian Peering connectivity

NOTE: This is old, we no longer have direct un-metered connectivity to AARNet, not since 2015.

We’ve worked hard during 2011 to secure some truely excellent Australian Internet Peering connectivity from our network base in Sydney and Canberra, gaining access to various peering networks across the country, from Perth to Brisbane and many niche, older and newer peering points between those cities on either side of Australia.

In combination with our “Peering Traffic is Unmetered” policies and capabilities across our network, this “Big Peering” capacity of Network Presence is useful for high bandwidth and low cost data transfer across Australia and particularly between cities and Industries. eg: we have full national peering connectivity with AARNet and CSIRO, providing excellent and high speed access to Australian Universities and our leading national science agency.

Of course all major ISPs of Australia (excluding Telstra and Optus, who refuse to peer domestically (except to eachother)) are reached by the peering links of Network Presence, as well as parts of Google incl. Youtube, CacheFly etc, and our aim for 2012 is to extend this peering capability of Nework Presence to major Asian Internet Peering points and further.

If you need to move data quickly from most of Australia to the Internet or back to another Australian network, we can often provide the “nexus” between those Australian networks and do so for a good low cost.

If you’d like to know more about our peering links or offerings, please contact us.

We’re a great “Second Site” because we own all our Infrastructure

Because we own all our Infrastructure, we’ve got a number of “second site” customers, and we’ve found a good win-win niche in providing “everything except ‘be live’ but be ready” capabilities in Sydney and/or Canberra.

How customers use this capability depends on their requirements, but for some customers we run custom checks that initiate a BGP “route announcement” for their own address-space and we deliver that to either Colo or on-demand (ie: cloud) VPSes, or other customers use DNS based failover to VPS that are running 24×7, and some use our great performing VPS Plans to run backups or clustered databases and other backends, etc.

Given our deep Internet skillset & experience, we can customise a redundancy/failover or “Second Site” service based on your unique requirements and please feel free to contact us if you’d like to know more as to how we could do this for your Internet presence.

We deliver high QoS because we own all our Infrastructure

Sometimes I get asked whether we’re ‘just a reseller’ of someone else’s services and it’s worth noting that we own all our Internet Infrastructure, which means that we have a different niche & capability, one that many of our competitors don’t and our business is focussed on operating the various layers of Internet Infrastructure needed to provide the v.high QoS that we have on the products & services that Network Presence provides.

This means that we own our servers, switches and routers, we rent the racks that they’re in from the Data Centres themselves, we own our Internet addresses & the Internet Links that provide our redundant access to the Internet, etc; and in most cases we get primary services from massive worldwide Telcos and companies that are able to meet our high availability & service level requirements.

To our customers this means that “The Buck Stops Here” and we’re well able to action any specific or custom hosting or Internet connectivity request or requirement you may have. We realise that we aren’t priced at the bottom of the market, but the return for our customers is that we own the whole stack of Internet Hosting & Connectivity for Network Presence, delivering the high QoS that is our trademark.

If your interested in discussing this further or have an Internet requirement which isn’t being met by your reseller hosting supplier, then please feel free to get in touch with us and we’d love to hear from you.
